I was wondering what data is actually blocked by a firewall and where is the firewall set up?

A firewall’s main job is to prevent external communication to your systems from internet based threats.  For example, a firewall could prevent a hacker from accessing your computer’s remote desktop feature.  You will have several firewalls; there will very likely be one at the boundary of your network installed in your router, and each of your end user devices will also have its own firewall installed as part of the operating system.
